Elizabeth Hayricke
Born 4th December 1769 and died 18th Ocober 1831

Quotation - 'The abolitionists have shown a great deal too much politeness and accomodation to these gentlemen, i.e. the slave traders.'

Elizabeth Hayricke has very little recognition in Leicestershire even though she campaigned bravely and tirelessly for the poor, the needy, for prison reform and of course for the abolition of slavery.

As a woman, she was denied access to the corridors of power but all her life she spoke out against tyranny and hypocrisy wherever she found it. She was particularly scathing of the slave trade and all those who ran it. Her pamphlets filtered into Parliament where they were read and used but it was never considered possible that they were the work of a woman. As can be seen from the quotation above, she battled even with the abolitionists whom she considered far too tardy and accomodating. She ran her own sugar boycott and, with the help of the Quaker movement and the huge influence of her writing, she hastened the demise of the slave trade. It is to the eternal shame of Parliament that it compensated the slave traders for the loss of the livelihood.
