A strange title, I know, but it does have some basis in logic. 'Not three bad' is a Leicesterism so I liked that and the Stanley bit comes from my attempt to introduce Dan to Camille. Camille has some problems with her ears and insisted on calling Dan Stanley. So it stuck and I used it for the album. It was recorded at Far Heath Studios in Northampton and mixed by Angus Wallace. Dan plays a big part on this album because I was now regularly gigging with him. In fact during the winter months prior to recording this album I was a regular visitor to Dan’s house in Melton Mowbray and we had a lot of fun preparing this album.

1. When You See What it's All Been About
The Berlin Wall was down and the West were rampant trying to westernize and privatize and generally exploit the situation to their own ends.

2. To Be Roving
A great little song extolling the joys of the open air, the countryside and the simple life.

3. Big Bad Jackaroo
For Jack [my second child]. An instrumental that tries musically to capture some of Jack’s sensitivity, beauty and appetite for living.

4. The Serb The Croat and the Muslim
During this dreadful time in Yugoslavia I read a diary by a girl called Zlata Filopovitch [I hope I got that right]. She lived in Sarajevo and she tells the story of the horrors of the war. What was weird for me at that time was we took a holiday in Rhodes and flew over Yugoslavia for a family holiday into Paradiso airport. The irony was not lost on me.

5. Oh My Lovely Daddy
Great song this and tells the story of my family’s experience in the two world wars and their frustration at never fully being able to overcome the difficulties of class and poverty. The weird thing is I never ever called my dad ‘daddy’ and never would. It’s just so yucky and middle class but It had to be that meter for the song.

6. It is the Fall
I wrote this in Vermont sitting on Graham and Camille’s porch and looking out at Mount Okemo and thinking of Nikki who was travelling in India. It's about loss and death and reincarnation. I love the song. Its structure is simple but its also quite profound.

7. There is One World
I’d had this song a long time and it’s a song that needed to be recorded. It’s a great song and it bemoans our complete disregard for the planet and the individual when it comes to profit.

8. Rodja
I don’t know why it's called Rodja because this is an autobiographical song. It explores the roles of my parents during my early years. My father’s distance and expectations, his forced preoccupation with work and my mother’s gentleness and joy.

9. The Ballad of the Tolpuddle Martyrs
Just shows you what happens when you line up against the rich bastards. Anyway we have unions now but look how they are being undermined. The awful power of the right wing press who will stop at nothing to keep the status quo.

10. She was the Captain’s Daughter
This song is actually about Anna Dixie from Market Bosworth and her father Lord Dixie. I have just updated it to make that more obvious and it will be released very soon. The song is again about the landed gentry and their preoccupation with their own perpetual elevation.

11. Til I Lay Me Down My Heavy Load
I’m not too good at rowing gently down the stream and songs like this remind me of my need to lighten up.
