about

Tubby Stephens (John William Stephens)
Born in Attleborough in Warwickshire (date unknown). Died April 4th 1908 in Leicestershire

Tubby Stephens lies buried in an unmarked grave in Welford Road cemetery in Leicester.

He was 24 stone and was thought to be the inspiration for the very well known song 'The Laughing Policeman'. There is a lovely print of Tubby standing by the Leicester Clock Tower which seems to catch some of his rather wonderful characteristics... strict but kind and caring. He apparently had his own trolley which he used for transporting the local drunks, felons and reprobates to the local 'nick' on Charles Street.

Thousands are said to have lined the streets of Leicester to watch his funeral procession as he was so well liked.
