about

James Hawker, the Leicestershire Poacher
Baptism 29th August 1836. Died 7th August 1921

James Hawker was, first and foremost, a man of the people. He poached because, like most of his class at the time in merry old England, he had no choice, i.e. eat or starve. He rubbed shoulders with the rich and mighty, many of whom eventually allowed him to poach on their lands without prosecution. However, he never compromised his integrity nor subjugated himself to their assumed seniority.

Read his book, James Hawker 'A Victorian Poacher: James Hawker's Journal'.
