about

George Davenport
Born in Wigston, Leicestershire in 1758 and hung at Redhill Circle at the end of August 1797

George Davenport was in fact a highwayman who did rob the rich to help the poor and as the accompanying song suggests there were many a poor peasant grateful for the sums of money he allegedly showered out on them. He is also alleged to have taken the King's shilling on more than one occasion and therefore became a target for the military.

He befriended the local butcher who had heard of George Davenport but didn't actually know who he was or what he looked like. Feigning another's identity, George wheeled himself into the confidence of the butcher and offered to walk home with him as a guard. Discovering the whereabouts of the butcher's money and pistol George relieved him of both.

George was hung at Redhill Circle in Leicester (near to Birstall); the hangman apparently botched the job and Davenport suffered a slow and agonising strangulation.
