about

Daniel Lambert
Born March 13th 1770. Died in Stamford in the Waggon and Horses public house on 21st June 1809

Daniel Lambert was over 50 stone in weight and measured over 10 foot around his girth. He was alleged to be a gentle and loveable man and was a relatively normal size until he reached his early 20's.

He was the Leicester gaoler for some time following in the footseps of his father. This was when the gaol was in Highcross Street. However, as his size grew and grew, he eventually toured as a freak in order to make a better living. He died in the Waggon and Horses in Stamford, probably due to cardiac arrest, and they had to break the wall down to get him out. It is said that twenty men had to act as pallbearers to lower his coffin into the grave. He is buried in a double ended grave in St Martin's Church, Stamford.
