Lady Jane Grey
(1537-1554) was the Nine Day Queen of England from 10th July until 19th July 1553

Lord Northumberland, in conspiracy with Lord Henry Grey and Lady Frances Grey, married her to Lord Guildford Dudley (Northumberland's son) with the intention that Jane would then pronounce Dudley King of England. However, Lady Jane's legitimacy to the throne was somewhat flawed. She was the great grandaughter of Henry VII and when Edward VI lay dying in June 1553, he nominated Jane as his successor thereby subverting the claims of Mary and Elizabeth. He did this because Jane was a staunch protestant and he wanted to reinforce the changes his father Henry VIII had made to The English Church, i.e. its separation from Rome. However Mary, Henry VIII's daughter and a staunch Roman Catholic, entered London with an army and had the support of the people of England as the natural heir and Lady Jane Grey was imprisoned in the tower with Dudley and Northumberland. She was eventually executed on February 12th 1554.

She was born at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire to Henry Grey and Frances Brandon and was a woman of considerable intellect and integrity and was well liked in Leicestershire. In fact, on the day of her execution the old oaks in Bradgate Park were pollarded as a mark of the respect the people of Leicestershire had for her.
